Media 2070 Leaders Discuss Afrofuturism and the Future of Media Reparations in Latest Interview with The Objective

Executive Director Anshantia Oso and Communications Director Venneikia Williams sat down with The Objective to discuss the initiative's transition to independence and the constant battle for Black narrative power.

By: MMM Editorial Team

After more than five years of building towards a world with media reparations, Media 2070 is transitioning boldly into a new era. Following its recent journey into an independent initiative sponsored by Allied Media Projects, the organization's executive team sat down for an exclusive Q&A with The Objective to discuss the future of Black narrative power.

During the interview, Anshantia Oso and Venneikia Williams explored the project's growth from a Free Press mission to an autonomous movement. Oso established that the name itself stems from Afrofuturist ideals: the goal being that, by the year 2070, media reparations will be a reality. This new independence allows the team to move and work with more intentionality, dedicating all efforts to reforming the system.

Dismantling Anti-Blackness in Journalism

Since it began, Media 2070 has always been focused on exposing the deep-seated anti-Blackness in mainstream media. Williams shed light on how the project's founding essay details the harms early newspapers perpetrated against enslaved Africans. Since becoming independent, Media 2070 can now respond forcefully to the current attacks Black journalists are facing and the constant erasure of Black history in public spaces.

Oso asserts that independence symbolizes Media 2070's backing of Black leadership and dedication to amplifying Black storytelling. Part of this commitment is the "Riot to Repair" archive, which shares community stories rather than breaking news models.

Becoming Meaning-Makers

The organization is celebrating Black Narrative Power Month by working towards a world where Black stories are told for Black communities and by Black communities. Williams established the need for power to make meaning within individuals.

Media 2070 is creating a new toolkit for the month of February to help people build their narratives.

Making Reparations Common Sense

This transition is a shift from incubation to real, radical action. Whether it is bringing Black stories to newsstands or teaching reparative journalism in classrooms, the aspiration here is to repair the media industry. Williams says we are only winning when media reparations become a "common sense" concept.
