The Next Stop Will Center Reproductive Care and Climate Justice
By: MMM Editorial Team
Media 2070 announced that the Black Future Newsstand, a traveling installation reimagining the physical space of news conversations and centering outlets that uplift Black narratives, will make its fifth stop in Houston this fall.
Theevent will highlight reproductive health and climate justice, bringing together local residents, advocates, and storytellers to envision a media system rooted in care and accountability. Past the opening weekend, the exhibit will remain available to the public until mid-November with an exact date to be announced later this Fall.
The Houston stop will be hosted in partnership with the PECAN Project, an East Texas-based initiative that works at the intersection of community health and environmental equity. Together, Media 2070 and PECAN will transform a public space into an interactive newsstand featuring stories, art, and community reporting that challenge harmful narratives and elevate solutions often overlooked in mainstream media.

A Platform for Urgent Stories
The Houston stop will center two pressing issues: reproductive health and climate justice. In Texas, where reproductive rights have faced sharp rollbacks and extreme weather continues to threaten vulnerable communities, both topics remain at the forefront of local and national debates. Organizers say that too often, stories about reproductive health and climate are covered through a narrow lens that sidelines Black communities. The Newsstand aims to shift this narrative, amplifying lived experiences and frontline voices while presenting reporting that points toward solutions.

National Movement, Local Roots
The Black Future Newsstand has already appeared in four cities across the country: Harlem, Chicago, LA and Austin,TX with each stop tailored to the local community’s most urgent stories. Previous installations have addressed policing, housing, and education, drawing thousands of participants and gaining coverage in major outlets.

By spotlighting Houston, organizers say they are not only acknowledging the city’s potential leadership in climate and health justice, but also affirming the importance of Southern narratives in national media reform.
The Newsstand is part of Media 2070’s broader effort to push for media reparations, which the group defines as repairing the harms caused by centuries of systemic exclusion, underrepresentation, and racist portrayals in U.S. media. Through reports, public events, and coalition building, Media 2070 is mobilizing journalists, activists, and everyday people to imagine — and demand — a more just media system.
