Hair Loss, Surgeries and Major Scarring can Leave Many Uncertain About Their Bodies, Yet a New Book Showcases Their Beauty & Strength

Rochester, NY — The Breast Cancer Confidence Project will host a book launch and community discussion Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 4 p.m. @ RIT Tait Preserve. The gathering will bring together survivors, advocates, and community members to share stories, discuss the impact of breast cancer on survivors’ bodies and self-image and celebrate the organization’s first official book launch,You Are Whole.
You are Whole is a photography-led book that centers more than a dozen women and their authentic accounts of being diagnosed with cancer, undergoing treatment and where they are now. Using the boudoir style, the photographs show the women in an intimate and rare light, allowing many to reclaim their sensuality and radiance. It’s part of a growing national trend to reframe living with, and post, cancer, helping women not only see just their beauty but revel in their power, bodily agency and self-compassion.
“Too often, conversations about breast cancer stop at treatment and survival,” said Michaela Raes, president, who was diagnosed at just age 28. She said a photoshoot with local photographer (and now BCCP vice president) Jolana Hollister pushed her to make boudoir shoots more accessible to others. “This book and our event is about thriving beyond breast cancer—about reclaiming confidence, body image, and community support. We believe these photos will help so many women and their families see their bodies in a new light and make healing an easier journey.”
