Media 2070’s innovative project, “Reparative Journalism Archive,” offers an opportunity to dive deep into reparative journalism. The first entry on the archive, “Riot to Repair: Community Archives on Media and Narrative,” allows community voices to shed light on the power of media and narrative.

Media 2070’s Riot to Repair Archive was recently featured on NewsOne, highlighting the project’s role in addressing the harms of mainstream journalism through community storytelling. The feature introduces Riot to Repair as a platform that gives voices often left out of dominant media narratives the space to tell their own stories through reparative journalism.
The NewsOne feature highlights the importance of hearing directly from community members and including their perspectives in mainstream media and in the historical record. By centering lived experience, the project challenges reporting practices that have often excluded or misrepresented impacted communities.
“This archive is a powerful way to platform voices that are often ignored and left out of published narratives of history,” said Diamond Hardiman, Reparative Narrative and Creative Strategy Director of Media 2070.
Through interviews and community conversations, Riot to Repair shares how residents, local organizers, and journalists were affected by the 2020 racial justice uprisings and the harmful narratives that followed in mainstream media. This approach to reparative storytelling allows impacted communities to reclaim how their experiences are represented, rather than leaving those narratives to others to shape.
As NewsOne previously reported, the Riot to Repair exhibit in Los Angeles offered a five-year retrospective on the uprising sparked by the police killing of George Floyd. The project also preserves experiences from installations and cultural activations such as the Black Future Newsstand.
Together, the NewsOne feature and Riot to Repair’s ongoing work reflect a growing demand for care, accountability, and community in journalism. By documenting these stories and making them public, the project contributes to efforts to create more responsible and inclusive media practices.
