MMM CEO Tianna Mañón on Being a Black Golfer: "They May Think I Don't Belong, But I've Never Felt That!"

A Celebration of Black Golfers and Relaxation on the Green

By: MMM Editorial Team

Tianna Mañón, our CEO, recently appeared on Only One Mic alongside fellow golfer Scott Parris to discuss the rich history of Black golfers and the importance of preserving and celebrating their contributions to the sport. Their conversation highlighted the significance of Shady Rest, the first African American-owned and operated golf club in the United States, and its role as a cornerstone for Black golfers during a time of segregation.

Mañón also shared her personal connection to the sport, rooted in her family’s history. Her great-grandfather, Alton Sutton, discovered his love for golf on a segregated course in Florida and became a skilled player despite the barriers of his time. Inspired by his legacy, Mañón began playing golf as a child and has continued to embrace the sport into adulthood. Mañón is also influenced by her father who also plays. Though both regularly enjoy tournaments, for Mañón, golf is less about competition and more about relaxation and community.

She said she values the opportunities it provides to connect with others and to enjoy the peaceful and restorative qualities of the green. This perspective underscores the broader significance of golf as a space for reflection, inclusion, and personal growth.

Parris, who invited Mañón to play in Shady Rest in June 2024, added to the conversation that the course has a long Black history and was one of the first Black-owned courses in the nation! Learn more about Shady Rest, John Shippen Jr. and the sport of golf in the latest episode.
