According to a report by The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime,"Haiti has been plunged into an unprecedented crisis since gangs began attacking the capital, Port-au-Prince, on 29 February 2024. This has had dramatic humanitarian consequences and direct political repercussions. The country’s prime minister, Ariel Henry, resigned on 11 March, and the transitional presidential council, a body set up by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to fill the void, is still not operational."
The conflict has a major impact on everyday citizens.
"Haiti is so much more than this and sometimes the focus is on just the violence. My country needs something positive right now," said Samson Tonton, an artist from Haiti currently living in Norwich, Conn. Samson's art reflects on the natural beauty of Haiti and its people in hopes for a healed country. Emerging from a period of unprecedented challenges and upheaval, the artwork serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, urging viewers to embrace their vulnerability as a path towards personal growth and authenticity.

In his painting "Headache," Samson points to the headaches and trials that Haitians are constantly facing, not only right now, but these conflicts have been ongoing for a long time.

"There are so many ways to help," he said, explaining that further out towns and villages see less of the violence but still need resources. "You don't have to help everyone, there are places like Childview that help children and even if you help just one, you're making an impact. Give what you can, pay attention to the news and know that this is a country with a beautiful and rich history."
